About Us

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured.
– B.K.S. Iyengar

Yoga is aimed at uniting the mind, body and spirit. We believe that when a person can find harmony between these three things, he or she can find healing, health and joy. No wonder so many people consider yoga their therapy!

Yoga helps you become more aware of your body’s posture, alignment and patterns of movement. It helps the body become more flexible and mobile and helps you relax even in the midst of a stress-filled environment. People usually come to yoga to lose weight, become more fit and find more energy. But in the process most people also find happiness, healing and peace. (Adapted from www.abc-of-yoga.com).

Plus What?

At Hot Yoga Plus, we believe in all yoga – every style, every temperature – for all people.  In fact, we believe that yoga is so much more than just the asanas and postures taught in a yoga class.  Yoga’s history dates back to 200 B.C. and the many layers and styles and benefits are as dynamic as its rich history. Hot Yoga Plus is where you can find all of this opportunity.

So “Plus What”? Hot Yoga Plus is a community of studios, both heated and non-heated, that is about so much more than the classes, workshops, retreats and teacher trainings we offer. We recognize and embrace that yoga is designed to meet the needs of the individual, no matter the pace or the temperature of the room, and so we offer classes for every need, from Power Flow to Slow Flow to Restorative to Hot 26. Hot Yoga Plus is a safe place to show up, breathe, and tap into the moment with like-minded people. Join us as we live, love, breathe, and practice yoga.

Testimonials from Students

I’ve found Hot Yoga Plus the ideal place to strengthen  connections of mindfulness with body potential, no matter one’s age, providing me the option of compact regimens that exercise the heart and body and spirit at my own pace.

I leave each class with renewed sense of energy and self.

  • Senator Bill Frist

Testimonials from Students

When a friend encouraged me to try Hot Yoga I was hesitant – mainly because I didn’t like yoga and I hated being hot.

And while my first class was tough, I walked away feeling better than I did before I went in the room. Before Hot Yoga, I couldn’t imagine exercise as anything other than a necessary evil.

After one year of practice and the profound affects yoga has had on my body, mind and spirit, I can’t imagine my life without it.

  •  Shea Brakefield

Testimonials from Students

I started yoga after being told it would decrease your stress level and make your body physically fit….and it did. What I learned was that I had become mentally reactive to my environment, which in turn negatively affected my mental and physical well being.

After 6 years on my mat, my world is a much calmer and brighter place.

  • John Cobb

Testimonials from Students

Curiosity brought me to my first Hot Yoga class, next the surprisingly great cardio workout brought me back, then it was for an intense stretch in order to complete my first marathon.

Now it is my need for a true mind, body and soul workout that keeps me coming. I do my best to set a strong foundation on my mat every time I enter the hot room both outwardly and internally. I sweat out my fears, worries and frustrations through hard work and determination. My mat has become my journal when I can’t seem to face the words I feel, I get it all out on the mat. This is what brings me to my mat at Hot Yoga Plus.

Newcomers

House Rules

15 minute rule for new students
New students should plan to arrive to class a minimum of 15 minutes prior to their first class. This ensures adequate time to get you signed-in, through orientation, and set-up on your mat. Please note that we may not be able to accommodate new students who show up less than 15 minutes before their first class.

2-minute rule
We lock the studio doors two minutes prior to class to ensure a prompt start time for classes. Please plan accordingly and do not expect to be let in the doors once they are locked.

Age Limit
Hot Yoga Plus welcomes any student age 12 and older.  Please note that any student under the age of 18 must have a signed parental/legal guardian consent form, which may be picked up at any of our studios.  We do not allow students under the age of 15 in our hot classrooms (Hot 26, some Power Flow classes).

Check-in policy
Please stop by the front desk and check in with the desk worker, even if you have signed-in online. This is critical. Each and every person must be accounted for.

Class reservations
The best way to reserve your spot in any class is to sign up online. You may reserve your spot in a class up to 30 minutes before class starts. We reserve spots for walk-in clients in each class, so don’t stress if a class shows as full online. Just show up early, and your chances are good! If you reserve a spot online and do not come to class, you will be charged unless you cancel your reservation online 30 minutes in advance. We cannot take phone cancellations. If you reserve a spot online and do not check in at the front desk at least 5 minutes prior to class, your spot may be given away.

Classroom silence
Please observe the sacred silence of the classrooms. This quiet stillness is one of the greatest gifts we give each other and ourselves.

Don’t shoot our <desk worker> messengers
If you are locked out of a class, please do not bang on the doors or verbally abuse our desk workers. They are just doing their job in locking the doors. Please just breathe. Breathing through the hard things is what we do at HYP. In short, don’t shoot the messenger.

Final Sale
Please choose wisely; all sales are final. No refunds. No exchanges. No extensions. No transfers. No sharing unlimited packages. No exceptions.  Please note that the shorter-term packages are more expensive because they offer flexibility. If you are unsure about your schedule, please choose a shorter-term package.

Lost and found
Items left in the studios are donated to Goodwill twice a month. If you think you may have left something behind, please check the Lost and Found, noting that occasionally items are washed, so it may take a day or two for them to show up in the bins. Check again if you don’t find your item the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never done yoga; can I come to any class?
Yes!  All of our classes are suitable for beginners, yet challenging enough for advanced practitioners. Anyone of any size, shape, condition or background can do hot yoga.

What if I’m not flexible?
Perfect! The most common misconception that prevents people from coming to yoga classes is that you need to be flexible. Yoga is not about how flexible you are today; it’s about increasing your flexibility to protect your mobility for the future.

Why is the room heated?
The room is heated to warm the muscles to help prevent injuries, and to allow a deeper workout. Sweating is a side benefit because it cleanses the body by flushing toxins through the skin. We closely manage both the heat and the humidity in our studios.

What time should I arrive at the studio?
The studio opens 30 minutes before each class. First time students must arrive at least 15 minutes in advance in order to fill out paper work and have a quick orientation.  Studio doors are locked 2 minutes before class starts, and no late students are admitted.

What should I wear to a hot yoga class?
You should wear comfortable workout clothing, but remember you will be sweating quite a bit. Exercise shorts and sports tops work well for women, and men can wear exercise shorts or swim trunks with an optional T-shirt.  All of our studios have full men’s and women’s dressing and shower rooms.

How should I prepare for class?
We recommend you either refrain from eating or eat very lightly two hours before class, and hydrate well throughout the day.  Show up with a yoga mat, a large towel and water (all required) or be prepared to rent these from the studio.

How often should I come?
As a beginner, it takes about 3 classes for your body and mind to understand the postures and what in the world you are doing in a hot yoga class! During the next 10 classes, digestion and respiration, as well as endocrine, lymphatic and elimination systems will begin to work harmoniously. Your appetite will normalize and unhealthy cravings will diminish. All of these results will help to normalize your weight if you devote yourself to regular practice at least, but preferably more than, 3 times per week. Unlike sports and other types of exercise, yoga is difficult to overdo. The more often you come, the greater the benefits.

Do you have child care?
Yes!  We offer child care services at our Brentwood location Monday – Friday during our 9:30 am and noon classes.

Childcare Rules + Policies

  • $5/child (childcare is not included in HYP class packages).
  • Ages 0-12
  • No feeding while child is under supervision of HYP Staff.
  • No changing diapers while child is under supervision of HYP Staff.
  • Childcare is only available while Parent/Guardian is present in the HYP studio taking class.
  • HYP may ask parents to leave class if there is a problem/issue with a child

Yoga Etiquette

  • Make it part of your yoga practice to arrive early. Getting to class about 10 minutes early can help you sign in, settle in and align your attitude with the purpose of the class. While you’re waiting you can practice a pose, do a few stretches or just sit or lie quietly, breathe and get centered.
  • Remove your shoes before entering the classroom
  • Please turn off cell phones, pagers & anything that makes noise and leave outside of the classroom.
  • Keep your eyes on your own practice. Every body is different. Wandering eyes can promote comparison and competition.
  • Be aware of the space around you. Try to avoid bumping into your neighbor and stepping on other people’s mats.
  • If you must leave class early, please set up your mat close to the door and leave quietly.  It is always helpful to let the teacher know that you plan to leave early so that they don’t follow you out of the classroom to make sure you are OK.
  • Always practice with a mat, towel and water bottle.  These are available for rent and sale if you forget something.
  • Pick up and neatly put away any props you use.
  • Please wipe up any sweat around your space.  Avoid wringing towels out in the classroom.
  • Please observe the silent space of the classroom.

Our Classes

Which Class Is Best For You?

Deep Stretch

ALL LEVELS. Our Deep Stretch class offers a deep, restorative approach to a yoga practice that will help to create structural and mental balance. Movement is gentle, slow, and intentional with support from the breath. Long, passive holds of 3-10 minutes, bring you inward and help open the body. A Deep Stretch Class will reduce aches and pains, prevent and heal injuries, enhance athletic performance, increase flexibility and relieve tension. The room is not heated.

Espresso Flow

ALL LEVELS. 44 minute shot of a sweaty power flow. 1 minute Savasana. Done! The room is heated between 85 and 90 degrees.

Hot 26

ALL LEVELS. Hot 26 classes consist of a series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises performed in a precise order incorporating a standing series and a flow series. This class systematically works the entire body, incorporating strength, balance and flexibility. The Hot 26 class will stimulate your mind and restore and reshape your body. The room is heated to 100 degrees.

Power Flow

ALL LEVELS. This dynamic, energizing and challenging style of yoga links breath and movement through unique sequences; combining sun salutations, standing postures and floor work. The smooth, continuous flow deepens the breath, develops core strength, increases endurance and challenges balance and flexibility. You will leave these classes with a renewed mental and physical energy. The room is heated between 85 and 90 degrees.

Hot 26 Fusion Flow

ALL LEVELS This 60-minute class fuses together all the postures of the Hot 26 with the key postures of a Power Flow to give you the best of both practices – perfect compliments to each other. It encompasses the detoxifying qualities of a Hot 26 class with the intensity of a power flow class for a hot, sweaty class that nurtures mind, body and soul. Classes range 95-98 degrees, with 20-30% humidity.

Restorative Yoga

ALL LEVELS. Restorative yoga is a practice that reduces stress and improves health. All postures are done in a passive manner with the support of blankets, blocks and other props. The power of restorative yoga lies in its ability to nurture one’s own internal healing processes. Studies have shown that deep relaxation affects us on a genetic level and has profound health benefits. The room is not heated.

Vinyasa Flow

ALL LEVELS. This low-moderate intensity class links breath to movement to get the heart rate up and to challenge the student in balance, innovation, and technique. Vinyasa Flow will help to develop physical and mental strength and will lead a gradual physical and mental opening. Sequencing will vary with instructor.

Yin/Yang

ALL LEVELS. Find a balance between the feminine and masculine aspects of yoga in this dynamic class. The first part of class will be a gentle Vinyasa practice flowing into about 45 minutes of longer holds in deep stretch postures. The room is typically not heated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are books and materials included in the training?
Your student manual is included in the training cost. Your textbooks are not, however, they may be purchased online or at the studio.

When will I find out if I’ve been accepted into the program I have applied for?
After you have submitted your application for a teacher training program, you will be contacted within two weeks with notification of your acceptance.

How proficient in yoga do you have to be in order to participate in the program?
Hot Yoga Plus’s Grow Yoga Teacher Training programs include intense asana practices throughout the length of the courses. We recommend, but do not require, that you have six months of a continuous practice before beginning training. If you have not practiced for six months, we will work with you to determine if the training is a good fit.

How many students are enrolled in the programs? Is it ALL ages?
Typically there may be as few as 5 to 6 students and as many as 25 to 30 in our teacher trainings. Our trainings are for students of all ages.

Do you offer scholarships?
Unfortunately, at this time, we do not offer scholarships. We may, however, be able to accommodate a payment plan on a case-by-case basis.

How much time should I expect to spend on homework?
In the weeks leading up to training, you can anticipate up to 1 hour a day in homework. These hours may include dialogue memorization, meditation, asana practice and book reports.

What is Yoga Alliance?
Yoga Alliance is a national organization that was created to recognize standards for yoga teachers and teacher training schools. Most studios are requiring their teachers to be YA-certified, however it is not a legal requirement for teaching yoga.

Will I be certified to teach yoga once I complete the 200 hour teacher training program?
You will be certified to teach yoga if you meet all of the requirements of the program.  Some students even go on to immediately open their own yoga studios! Upon completion of our program you will receive a teaching certificate to also become registered with the Yoga Alliance.

Testimonials from Graduates

Teacher Training at Hot Yoga is a life-changing experience.

I have been practicing consistently for three years, and this teacher training has taken my practice to the next level. Not only is it challenging physically but challenging mentally. Johnna Smith has a dynamic presence and has made my yoga experience more enriching. I highly recommend this journey to anyone passionate about personal growth.

  • Kathleen Goodman

Testimonials from Graduates

Teacher training was an experience for which I will be forever grateful.

Studying something I love like yoga with a teacher like Ame Onofrey was something special and uplifting. I now have a skill that I can utilize to influence people in such a positive way. Not to mention the impact that it has had on my own life – being able to do something I love every day which is good for my mind, body and spirit.

  • Tara Smith

Testimonials from Graduates

Teacher training with Johnna Smith has given me so much more than a skill set for yoga instruction. The process of self-study and totally honest sharing with the other students has led to some major personal transformation. I’ve faced down my bad habits and excuses, discovered tools for growth, and I am more motivated than ever to do my life with purpose and integrity.

I know that whether I teach yoga or not (and I plan to!), this training has shown me how to live every day with grace, compassion, and power.

  • Daryn Jackson

Testimonials from Graduates

What a beautiful journey!

Teacher training has provided me with a myriad of blessings: knowledge, skill, drive and patience.  Also, the friendships that I have made and continue to nourish are irreplaceable. Our master teacher Ame Onofrey has provided us the skills to spread our love of yoga!

Most of us began practicing yoga for the physicality and soon learned that it is so much more: mind, body and spirit!

  • Tara Hennemann

Testimonials from Graduates

Not only is Ame an absolutely wonderful mentor, her approach to yoga both on and off the mat is inspiring and has helped me grow my practice physically and mentally.

Between her and the wonderful friends I’ve made through the experience I can honestly say that teacher training was one of the best things I have ever done!
