About Us

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured.
– B.K.S. Iyengar

Yoga is aimed at uniting the mind, body and spirit. We believe that when a person can find harmony between these three things, he or she can find healing, health and joy. No wonder so many people consider yoga their therapy!

Yoga helps you become more aware of your body’s posture, alignment and patterns of movement. It helps the body become more flexible and mobile and helps you relax even in the midst of a stress-filled environment. People usually come to yoga to lose weight, become more fit and find more energy. But in the process most people also find happiness, healing and peace. (Adapted from www.abc-of-yoga.com).

Plus What?

Isn’t hot yoga simply yoga in a heated classroom? Well, yes, but actually hot yoga is not just about the heat. It’s not even all about the asanas, or postures. Yoga’s history dates back to 200 B.C. and the many layers and styles and benefits are as dynamic as its rich history. Hot Yoga Plus is where you can find all of this opportunity.

Hot Yoga Plus provides a safe, encouraging and challenging environment for you to get into your body and out of your mind. Isn’t the mind where most of the craziness happens anyway? By moving our physical bodies, we are able to get rid of blockages in the mind and spirit that prevent us from living a life of joy and truth. On an individual level, yoga is entirely yours. On a community level, you are cared for and always supported at Hot Yoga Plus.

So plus what? Hot Yoga Plus is more than the hot 26, power flow and restorative classes we offer. It is more than our workshops, retreats and teacher trainings. Hot Yoga Plus is a safe place to show up, breathe, and tap into the moment with like-minded people. Join us as we live, love, breathe, and practice yoga.

Testimonials from Students

I’ve found Hot Yoga Plus the ideal place to strengthen  connections of mindfulness with body potential, no matter one’s age, providing me the option of compact regimens that exercise the heart and body and spirit at my own pace.

I leave each class with renewed sense of energy and self.

  • Senator Bill Frist

Testimonials from Students

When a friend encouraged me to try Hot Yoga I was hesitant – mainly because I didn’t like yoga and I hated being hot.

And while my first class was tough, I walked away feeling better than I did before I went in the room. Before Hot Yoga, I couldn’t imagine exercise as anything other than a necessary evil.

After one year of practice and the profound affects yoga has had on my body, mind and spirit, I can’t imagine my life without it.

  •  Shea Brakefield

Testimonials from Students

I started yoga after being told it would decrease your stress level and make your body physically fit….and it did. What I learned was that I had become mentally reactive to my environment, which in turn negatively affected my mental and physical well being.

After 6 years on my mat, my world is a much calmer and brighter place.

  • John Cobb

Testimonials from Students

Curiosity brought me to my first Hot Yoga class, next the surprisingly great cardio workout brought me back, then it was for an intense stretch in order to complete my first marathon.

Now it is my need for a true mind, body and soul workout that keeps me coming. I do my best to set a strong foundation on my mat every time I enter the hot room both outwardly and internally. I sweat out my fears, worries and frustrations through hard work and determination. My mat has become my journal when I can’t seem to face the words I feel, I get it all out on the mat. This is what brings me to my mat at Hot Yoga Plus.

House Rules

15 minute rule for new students
New students should plan to arrive to class a minimum of 15 minutes prior to their first class. This ensures adequate time to get you signed-in, through orientation, and set-up on your mat. Please note that we may not be able to accommodate new students who show up less than 15 minutes before their first class.

2-minute rule
We lock the studio doors two minutes prior to class to ensure a prompt start time for classes. Please plan accordingly and do not expect to be let in the doors once they are locked.

Check-in policy
Please stop by the front desk and check in with the desk worker, even if you have signed-in online. This is critical. Each and every person must be accounted for.

Class reservations
The best way to reserve your spot in any class is to sign up online. You may reserve your spot in a class up to 30 minutes before class starts. We reserve spots for walk-in clients in each class, so don’t stress if a class shows as full online. Just show up early, and your chances are good! If you reserve a spot online and do not come to class, you will be charged unless you cancel your reservation online 30 minutes in advance. We cannot take phone cancellations. If you reserve a spot online and do not check in at the front desk at least 2 minutes prior to class, your spot may be given away.

Classroom silence
Please observe the sacred silence of the classrooms. This quiet stillness is one of the greatest gifts we give each other and ourselves.

Don’t shoot our <desk worker> messengers
If you are locked out of a class, please do not bang on the doors or verbally abuse our desk workers. They are just doing their job in locking the doors. Please just breathe. Breathing through the hard things is what we do at HYP. In short, don’t shoot the messenger.

Final Sale
Please choose wisely; all sales are final. No refunds. No exchanges. No extensions. No transfers. No sharing unlimited packages. No exceptions.  Please note that the shorter-term packages are more expensive because they offer flexibility. If you are unsure about your schedule, please choose a shorter-term package.

Lost and found
Items left in the studios are donated to Goodwill twice a month. If you think you may have left something behind, please check the Lost and Found, noting that occasionally items are washed, so it may take a day or two for them to show up in the bins. Check again if you don’t find your item the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never done yoga; can I come to any class?
Yes!  All of our classes are suitable for beginners, yet challenging enough for advanced practitioners. Anyone of any size, shape, condition or background can do hot yoga.

What if I’m not flexible?
Perfect! The most common misconception that prevents people from coming to yoga classes is that you need to be flexible. Yoga is not about how flexible you are today; it’s about increasing your flexibility to protect your mobility for the future.

Why is the room heated?
The room is heated to warm the muscles to help prevent injuries, and to allow a deeper workout. Sweating is a side benefit because it cleanses the body by flushing toxins through the skin. We closely manage both the heat and the humidity in our studios.

What time should I arrive at the studio?
The studio opens 30 minutes before each class. First time students must arrive at least 15 minutes in advance in order to fill out paper work and have a quick orientation.  Studio doors are locked 2 minutes before class starts, and no late students are admitted.

What should I wear to a hot yoga class?
You should wear comfortable workout clothing, but remember you will be sweating quite a bit. Exercise shorts and sports tops work well for women, and men can wear exercise shorts or swim trunks with an optional T-shirt.  All of our studios have full men’s and women’s dressing and shower rooms.

How should I prepare for class?
We recommend you either refrain from eating or eat very lightly two hours before class, and hydrate well throughout the day.  Show up with a yoga mat, a large towel and water (all required) or be prepared to rent these from the studio.

How often should I come?
As a beginner, it takes about 3 classes for your body and mind to understand the postures and what in the world you are doing in a hot yoga class! During the next 10 classes, digestion and respiration, as well as endocrine, lymphatic and elimination systems will begin to work harmoniously. Your appetite will normalize and unhealthy cravings will diminish. All of these results will help to normalize your weight if you devote yourself to regular practice at least, but preferably more than, 3 times per week. Unlike sports and other types of exercise, yoga is difficult to overdo. The more often you come, the greater the benefits.

Yoga Etiquette

  • Make it part of your yoga practice to arrive early. Getting to class about 10 minutes early can help you sign in, settle in and align your attitude with the purpose of the class. While you’re waiting you can practice a pose, do a few stretches or just sit or lie quietly, breathe and get centered.
  • Remove your shoes before entering the classroom
  • Please turn off cell phones, pagers & anything that makes noise and leave outside of the classroom.
  • Keep your eyes on your own practice. Every body is different. Wandering eyes can promote comparison and competition.
  • Be aware of the space around you. Try to avoid bumping into your neighbor and stepping on other people’s mats.
  • If you must leave class early, please set up your mat close to the door and leave quietly.  It is always helpful to let the teacher know that you plan to leave early so that they don’t follow you out of the classroom to make sure you are OK.
  • Always practice with a mat, towel and water bottle.  These are available for rent and sale if you forget something.
  • Pick up and neatly put away any props you use.
  • Please wipe up any sweat around your space.  Avoid wringing towels out in the classroom.
  • Please observe the silent space of the classroom.

Our Classes

Which Class Is Best For You?

Espresso Flow
A 44 minute shot of a sweaty power flow. 1 minute Savasana. Done!

Hot 26
Our Hot 26 classes consist of a series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises performed in a precise order and in a room heated to approximately 100 degrees. This class systematically works the entire body while also incorporating strength, balance and flexibility. The Hot 26 class will stimulate your mind and restore and reshape your body. Every class is for EVERY ONE of all ages and all fitness levels.

Hot 26 Community Class
Our 60-minute Hot 26 class and only $10. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to charity. Recent graduates of HYP’s Grow Yoga School teach these classes.

Power Flow
This dynamic, energizing and challenging style of yoga links breath and movement through unique sequences; combining sun salutations, standing postures and floor work. The smooth, continuous flow deepens the breath, develops core strength, increases endurance and challenges balance and flexibility.  You will leave these classes with a renewed mental and physical energy. The room is heated between 85 and 90 degrees.

Power Flow Community Class
Our Power Hour class and only $10. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to charity. Recent graduates of HYP’s Grow Yoga School teach these classes.

Power Flow Plus
Some like it hot! This class combines the strength moves of our Power Flow classes with more heat and humidity. The result is a dynamic flow that incorporates static holds, inversions and core conditioning. Prepare to sweat and be pushed to your edge.

Restorative Yoga
Restorative yoga is a therapeutic style of yoga that encourages rest in the mind, body and spirit. Each asana can be used as a powerful tool to reduce stress, restore health, soothe organs and improve circulation. We hold our postures longer in class, which helps the yogi to surrender into the pose and relax deeply.

Yogi Sprouts
A fun and creative approach to yoga through the use of storytelling, music and art. In this 45-minute class, kids are encouraged to explore their mind and body in a fun-filled way. Our basic stretching exercises will promote strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness. Each week, as we explore yoga poses, we will also explore breathing exercises, visual imagery and relaxation techniques. All of which are important when conveying lessons in self-expression, body image and positive thinking.

After you have submitted your application for a teacher training program, you will be contacted within two weeks with notification of your acceptance.

How proficient in yoga do you have to be in order to participate in the program?
Hot Yoga Plus’s Grow Yoga Teacher Training programs include intense asana practices throughout the length of the courses. In the weeks leading up to training, you can anticipate up to 1 hour a day in homework. These hours may include dialogue memorization, meditation, asana practice and book reports.

What is Yoga Alliance?
Yoga Alliance is a national organization that was created to recognize standards for yoga teachers and teacher training schools. Most studios are requiring their teachers to be YA-certified, however it is not a legal requirement for teaching yoga.

Will I be certified to teach yoga once I complete the 200 hour teacher training program?
You will be certified to teach yoga if you meet all of the requirements of the program.  Some students even go on to immediately open their own yoga studios! Upon completion of our program you will receive a teaching certificate to also become registered with the Yoga Alliance.

Testimonials from Graduates

Teacher training was an experience for which I will be forever grateful.

Studying something I love like yoga with a teacher like Ame Onofrey was something special and uplifting. I now have a skill that I can utilize to influence people in such a positive way. Not to mention the impact that it has had on my own life – being able to do something I love every day which is good for my mind, body and spirit.

  • Tara Smith

Testimonials from Graduates

Teacher training with Johnna Smith has given me so much more than a skill set for yoga instruction. The process of self-study and totally honest sharing with the other students has led to some major personal transformation. I’ve faced down my bad habits and excuses, discovered tools for growth, and I am more motivated than ever to do my life with purpose and integrity.
